Personal Learning Environments and Learning Management Systems

Below you can see a screencast of the first part of a workshop held by me and teacher Ulrich Weber at the German moodlemoot 2009 in Bamberg. It shows how we use moodle in the college and illustrates how we integrated other Web 2.0 tools before we show how we link the students PLEs to our LMS moodle.

Official Google Praise

I'm still dead-chuffed about this post in the Official Google Docs Blog. I never would have thought that a simple idea like the one posted here would

a) be innovative enough to be deemed worthy of a mention by Google themselves
b) find that much attention in the language teaching community

It just goes to show that you need not just do it, but talk, write or make videos about it so that other people can benefit, too. If we all share using the www, we can really take informal professional development to new heights.

Blogs in foreign language teaching

What you are reading here is a blog post. A blog is a simple website which adds new items to the top of the page.

The presentation below will hopefully show you how easy it is to become a blogger and give you some ideas for using blogs with your language classes. Further it illustrates one of the newer features of Google docs, embedding presentations. To view a larger version of this presentation click here...

Voki.com- Getting reluctant speakers to talk

Hi there!

Sorry it took so long for me to continue this series but sometimes the day job can be so flipping time-consuming ;-)

Today I want to present voki.

You and your students need:
  • a voki.com account
  • a computer with microphone
Click on the "play" button for a short presentation of voki!

Why not try it out!

Extended Task:

You can create a discussion using vokis by having students post vokis to forums (in Moodle for example) so that the next student responds with their own voki.

Mindmeister - mindmaps with team spirit

Here's the second video of the series.

This time I am looking at how we can integrate collaborative mindmapping into our foreign language lessons.

If you need a general overview about this visualisation technique I recommend this wikipedia article. As usual I am grateful if you leave suggestions and feedback in the comments sections.
